In 1972, Lawrence Gottschamer fue retirado del servicio activo del Cuerpo de Bomberos de Redwood City, California. 3 años después, Lawrence fue parte del inicio de la industria de macadamia en Costa Rica cuando asisitió en la plantación de 100 acres de macadamia en ese país. Recibió entrenamiento en agricultura sostenible del Dr. Edelberto Camacho, un reconocido ingeniero agrónomo de Cosa Rica.
Al finalizar el trabajo y con la plantación de macadamia establecida, Lawrence se dirigió a Guatemala, donde la macadamia no era tan bien conocida. Construyó varias plantas procesadoras y fue co-fundador de Voit, Juárez y Gottschamer, Asesores. Fue durante este tiempo que conoció a su esposa, Emilia Aguirre, quien hasta hoy comparte su pasión por el medio ambiente. Se casaron y han trabajado juntos desde entonces por la conservación del mismo.
En 1984, Lawrence Gottschamer y su esposa Emilia Aguirre adquieren almácigo de macadamia de la Asociación Californiana de Macadamia. Este material genético era uno de los más avanzados en su día. En 1985, Lawrence y Emilia fundan la Estación Experimental Vahalla. A través de la crianza selectiva, ellos lograron obtener variedades locales que podían producir comercialmente sin requerir injertos. Esto ayuda a preservar la diversidad en el banco genético de la especie y va de la mano con su apoyo a las prácticas sostenibles de agricultura.
Su meta principal era encontrar soluciones para ayudar a las comunidades indígenas locales a tener acceso a un mayor ingreso económico, empleo y bienestar. La siembra de árboles de macadamia aborda estos problemas de manera admirable. Con este objetivo, Valhalla inicia su programa de donación de árboles de macadamia a comunidades locales de agricultores, con el deseo que los agricultores los cultiven, vendan el producto, lo consuman y se beneficien de una fuente constanhte de empleo, ingreso económico y alimento. Hemos sembrado cientos de miles de árboles de macadamia en Guatemala, creando en el país un banco genético de miles de variedades de macadamia.
El cambio climático global y las prácticas agrícolas antisostenibles están destruyendo al planeta. Estamos dedicados a la preservación y curación del planeta a través de la agricultura sostenible y la educación de la comunidad agrícola local. Por más de 20 años hemos sembrado y mantenido plantaciones de macadamia, preservando el medio ambiente y promoviendo la agricultura sostenible.
Our Story
In 1972, Lawrence Gottschamer was retired in the line of duty as a fireman in Redwood City, CA. 3 years later, he was part of the begginnings of the macadamia industry in that country when he assisted in the planting of 100 acres of macadamia there. He was trained in sustainable agricultura by Dr- Edelberto Camacho, a well known agricultural engineer from Costa Rica.
When the work was finished and the plantation established in Costa Rica, Lawrence went to Guatemala, where macadamia was not as well known. He built several small processing plants and was co-founder of an agro-insustrial consulting company, "Voit, Juarez and Gottschamer, Consultants" It was during this time that he met his wife, Emilia Aguirre. who shares to this day his passion for the environment. They married and have been working together since then for the preservation of the environment.
In 1984, Larry Gottschamer, and his wife, Emilia Aguirre acquired macadamia seedlings from the California Macadamia Society. This stock was considered one of the most advanced gene pools of macadamia in its day. In 1985 Lawrence and Emilia founded the Experimental Station Valhalla. By selectively breeding these varieties from California they were able to obtain local varieties that could produce commercially without requiring a graft, which helps preserve the genetic diversity of a species and goes in hand with their support of sustainable agricultural practice.
Their main goal was to find solutions that would help local indigenous communities to have access to more income, employment and general well-being. Planting macadamia trees addresses these issues admirably well. And so, Valhalla started donating macadamia trees to local farming communities, hoping local farmers would grow them, sell them eat them and benefit from a source of constant income, food and labor. We have planted hundreds of thousands of macadamia trees throughout Guatemala, providing the country with the most diverse gene bank of macadamia varieties.
Global climate change and unsustainable practices are destroying the planet. We are dedicated to the preservation and healing of the planet through sustainable agriculture and the education of indigenous people. For over twenty years we have been planting and maintaining Macadamia trees, preserving the environment and promoting sustainable agriculture.
